The National Weather Service's morning forecast discussion released just before 6 a.m says the chances of an overcast day now appear to be almost gone.

If you're hoping to stare up into the heavens today for the solar eclipse you might just see a lot of clouds (and midday darkness, of course).

The eclipse will cross directly over five state capitals and an estimated 12 million Americans live in the path of solar eclipse totality, according to the environmental group.

Scattered showers and storms are possible through the weekend.

Rain chances return late Monday through the middle of next week. There's about a 60 percent chance of heavy clouds, he said.
