Google's answer to Apple's ARKit is late and underwhelming

If you have the hardware to get started already, you have several choices of development environment to use-Google's Android Studio, Unity, and Epic's Unreal Engine all support Google's ARcore platform.

As for now, ARCore is only available for Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S8 but Google is working with other manufacturers to roll it out as quickly as possible.

Google didn't give any indication as to when the ARcore platform would be available on a wider range of devices, and a disclaimer found on Google AR developer resource page gives us the impression that the platform is far from mature, which suggests that we may be waiting for a while.

Essentially, the difference between the two is that Google Tango was an inherently hardware-based project while ARCore is evolving to launch as an open software platform.

ARCore focuses on motion tracking via the phone's camera. ARCore can detect horizontal surfaces using the same feature points it uses for motion tracking, meaning AR objects can be placed on, say, a floor or table, more easily.

Google says it hopes that AR apps will be up and running on 100 million devices before the developer tools are even out of preview.

ARCore will support existing phones, including now Google's Pixel phones, and Samsung's S8 running 7.0 Nougat and above, with more devices being added over time.

ARCore is the answer to Apple's ARKit, which was used by Dunkin Donuts when they made a decision to cause a solar eclipse with a donut hole.

ARCore is created to work on millions of existing Android devices and does not require special depth sensors or dual cameras. Android 7.0 Nougat or above is required.

Google didn't want to be left out of the AR race that is now taking place. Pour one out for Tango - the battle between ARKit and ARCore is officially on. "It brings augmented reality capabilities to existing and future Android phones", the company wrote in a blog post, adding that developers can tinker with it right now.

Just as is in Apple's ARKit, ARCore will use the camera's sensors to "feature points in the room" as well as to determine the position and the orientation of the device as it'll be moving towards virtual objects.

It is also developing a special AR web browser allowing developers to create AR websites. Until now, many AR masterpieces have come out of ARKit, such as "Take On Me" style music video, restaurant app that can display virtual food items, a virtual pet game, and others.

Google meanwhile is attempting to develop a system which would equally be capable of being installed on the 100 million devices that now run the Android operating system, but is behind Apple on creating something lightweight that could be run on older devices.
