USA successfully tests shooting down ballistic missile

The US Missile Defense Agency said it had conducted jointly with the US Navy soldiers missile defense flight test, intercepting a medium-range ballistic missile target off the coast of Hawaii.

The U.S. military shot an incoming missile out of the sky in a successful intercept test Wednesday.

Monday's test missile was launched from Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai in Hawaii.

Mike Campisi, Raytheon's SM-6 senior program director, said the company developed the anti-ballistic missile capability in just seven months after it was requested earlier this year. A sailor on the USS John Paul Jones triggered a self-destruct sequence by mistake.

While Tokyo said the North Korean test was "an unprecedented, serious and grave threat" to the Japanese nation, Pyongyang described it as "a meaningful prelude to containing Guam Island", as well as "decisive countermeasures against joint military exercises", referring to the US base in Micronesia and the joint US-South Korea drills respectively.

The ship detected and tracked a target missile launched from Kauai, Hawaii, "with its onboard AN/SPY-1 radar, and onboard SM-6 missiles executed the intercept", the statement read.

Due to the diplomatic efforts and sanctions failing to make headway in stopping the North Korea threat, Higbie is concerned the US may be forced to consider the military options.

The test comes amid heightened tensions between North Korea and the US.

Separately, the MDA this week awarded Raytheon Missile Systems a $615 million contract, with $45 million in fiscal 2017 funding obligated initially, to produce 17 Standard Missile-3 Block IIA ballistic-missile interceptors and perform related work. The test was considered a direct challenge to President Trump, who has threatened the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, that America would respond with "fire and fury" to provocations.

The August 30 test launch was the third time that the Standard Missile-6 successfully engaged a ballistic missile target in its terminal phase.
