Apple asks FCC for 'strong, enforceable open internet protections'

Service providers can't give special access to business partners or companies that pay them off. In short, the company has opposed "Paid Prioritization" as it may lead to the creation of paid fast lanes on the Internet.

Late yesterday, a group of over 500 small businesses and trade associations from across the country signed an open letter raising concerns over the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) plan to repeal net neutrality. Although he's made noises about repealing the current legal mechanism that makes net neutrality rules enforcable, his best plan for keeping net neutrality once the rules are in place is a gentleman's agreement with the ISPs to play nice.

After a long silence, Apple defended net neutrality in a letter to the FCC Thursday.

Apple, Amazon, Netflix and others that have built huge businesses under the lighter regulatory regime have come out against Pai's proposals, arguing that the government's policies should ensure an open Internet with prohibitions against broadband providers throttling, blocking or prioritizing some traffic.

According to a report in Recode, the U.S. tech giant has urged the FCC to not roll back the ban on existing fast lanes, which provides access to various internet services to come to the forefront.

"Nothing about the internet was broken in 2015", he said, speaking of when the FCC moved to regulate the internet as a public utility under Title II of the Telecommunications Act. Many comments are apparently from spam bots and form letters, but Chairman Ajit Pai's proposal to undo net neutrality rules has received massive attention. "There is simply no reasonable justification for repealing the net neutrality protections now on the books". "The result would be an internet with distorted competition where online providers are driven to reach deals with broadband providers or risk being stuck in the slow lane and losing customers due to lower quality service".

Pai, who has called the internet "the greatest free market success in history", said he wants to go back to the internet rules instituted in 1996 under President Clinton and a Republican Congress.
