Super Eagles Thrash Cameroon 4-0 In Uyo

Goals by Odion Ighalo, Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kelechi Iheanacho gave the three-time African Champions the vital victory which took them one step closer to their sixth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

It was the flawless response for the Eagles after the shock home defeat to South Africa in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in June, as they now move up to nine points - seven points clear of second-placed Cameroon after three games.

Cameroon, who have made an African record seven previous World Cup finals appearances and won the African Nations Cup in February, host Nigeria in a return qualifier in Yaounde on Monday.

Victory in that match will all but secure a place for the Eagles in the world cup for the 3 successive time.

"Mikel is our leader and demonstrated that against Cameroon", said the coach about the China-based playmaker who scored the second goal against the "Indomitable Lions".

Nigeria are sitting pretty in Group B - branded the "group of death" - with a maximum nine points from three matches.

"I watched the game against the Cameroonians on Friday and I am sure you have the ability to conquer them again in their own territory".

"There is something like honour, we will defend that on Monday in Yaounde".

Victor Moses inspired Nigeria to take a step closer to World Cup qualification on Friday but Cameroon, Ghana and South Africa suffered serious blows to their chances of reaching next year's finals in Russian Federation. It's only by the ending minutes of the first half that the tables turned.

Gernot Rohr's men are expected to begin preparations for the reverse leg of their 2018 World Cup qualifier against the Indomitable Lions quickly, as the game is billed for Monday evening.

South Africa had hopes of a fourth appearance at the four-yearly global football showpiece dented by a 2-1 away loss to Cape Verde after taking an early lead. "We will try, of course, to contain them; they are aggressive and very physical but we are also ready physically to have a big fight with them".
