A Nissan Leaf Nismo might be coming, eventually

The new Leaf should be a practical auto: it can seat five people "comfortably", while its boot measures 435 litres, which is an increase of 65 litres over its predecessor. As with most electric cars the Leaf if capable of slowing, and even stopping, without the driver having to touch the brake pedal. Tesla Inc. launched its entrant into the mass market in July, the Model 3, priced at $35,000 before the federal tax credit and with a starting range of 220 miles.

The new Nissan Leaf will have a range of 400km, a 40% improvement on the previous model, requires less frequent charging than the previous model and incorporates three innovations: autonomous driving, electrification and intelligent integration, which involves how the new model connects to a wider society. Keep in mind that the range could fall when using United States fuel economy standards. So, the question popped into my head, "Will the next-gen 2018 Nissan LEAF be available in a month or so, or will it take several months to actually hit the market?" Until then, the roughly $30,000 Leaf could be a good choice for a budget conscious shopper who doesn't regularly travel long distances. When will other performance-oriented electric cars come?

In the gala rolling out event in Japan, Nissan Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci stressed that the Leaf was superior to Tesla offerings because Nissan had decades of experience making cars, and had more expertise on safety and other convenience features for cars.

So, we would get to see e-Pedal, ProPilot and ProPilot Park features in this new Nissan Leaf vehicle for this year's edition. Prices in Japan will start from 3.15 million yen ($28,992).

The new Leaf, launched on Wednesday, goes on sale in Japan from October 2 and elsewhere early next year.

That's not to say the new Leaf is retrograde by any stretch of the imagination: the seven-inch digital dashboard display shows information regarding battery life and range, as well as the status of the car's adaptive cruise control and its self-parking system (see below). You have autonomous drive technology, a new battery, new powertrain. Along with excellent aerodynamics, the styling - from the sleek silhouette to the car's "advanced expression" - evokes the exhilaration of driving an EV. But if it wants to compete with Teslas of the world without breaking bank, these tiny additions could go a long way, especially if they become options across Nissan's line of vehicles one day.

This SUV and subsequent EV siblings are expected to use the same 40kWh batteries as the new Leaf to offer a range of about 379km.

Nissan Australia has given no indication of pricing for the next Leaf. "We just have to balance value with range".
