'Star Wars,' Marvel films to move from Netflix to Disney streaming service

As reported by Coming Soon, Disney CEO Bob Iger recently spoke at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2017 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference and gave some details on the still pretty mysterious, unnamed Disney streaming service.

Iger also narrowed the time frame when the Disney streaming service will launch, saying he expects it will go live in late 2019.

Meanwhile, separately from the Disney movie pact, Netflix has a multiyear deal with Marvel for original series based on Marvel's street-hero characters, including "Daredevil", "Jessica Jones", "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist".

As a part of the strategy, however, Disney last month said it would spend $1.58 billion to acquire majority control of streaming technology company BAMTech. However, Disney has now confirmed that it will indeed be removing its content from Netflix in favour of exclusive availability on its own service.

Last month, Disney announced that it would be pulling a number of Disney titles from the Netflix catalog.

Disney hasn't said yet if another Marvel TV show - "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." on ABC - would make the exclusive jump from Netflix to its upcoming streaming platform. After Iger said the company's earnings will be "roughly" the same as past year, shares for Disney dropped by 2.9%, according to CNBC. Not only will the draw of having the ability to stream hypothetically any Star Wars or MCU film instantly be appealing for fans, but it also opens up the door for original content to be included later on. However, it appears they've come up empty in such a request, as both MCU and Star Wars movies will leave Netflix by 2019. "ESPN and Disney are two of them". Iger did not announce how much the service will cost.

Disney will also next year launch a direct-to-consumer ESPN sports service. In addition to including every CBS show known to man, All Access is the home of The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight as well as their new Star Trek series Discovery.
