Tesla Extends EV Range For Hurricane Irma Evacuees

According to commentators, Tesla chose to take action after the Florida-based owner of one of its cars contacted the company and asked for a temporary upgrade to make it out of the evacuation zone.

Once upon a time, consumers could purchase a Tesla with a 75 kWh battery, which was proprietarily limited to 60 or 70 kWh.

Tesla's free remote unlock of this extra range for owners in the path of Irma gave them an additional 30 to 40 miles (50 to 60 km) of range to aid in their getting out of the hurricane's way.

In an email sent by Tesla to its users, the consumers were notified of an automatic adjustment that allowed them to access their car's hidden capacity.

Some Tesla owners might have felt an advantage over drivers of gasoline-powered cars during the evacuations. For example, Tesla has sold Model S cars rated P60D-the 60 stands for 60kWh of energy storage-that actually have 75kWh batteries.

That's due to Tesla using an unforeseen feature of their over-the-air software update system.

Initially, Tesla made extra battery capacity available to customers for $9,000, but has since dropped the price to $2,000.

Reports of the change initially came in via users on the Tesla forums and the Tesla subreddit, but the company has since confirmed that it was an intentional measure. Another owner pointed out that Tesla said the upgrade will be effective through 16 September.

The southern state's Supercharger network-a global grid of 480-volt fast-charging stations-is quite extensive, running from the Keys to the Panhandle.

Hurricane Irma left the Caribbean devastated last week and has ripped through Florida, too, leaving huge flooding in its wake.
