Dortmund game is like a final for Spurs - Pochettino

Pochettino's men start their European campaign with a home match at Wembley, against Dortmund.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has reiterated that the recent struggles of English sides in Europe is down to a lack of winter break. "In theory, it should be Real Madrid first and the others trying for second, but football is not about theory", the Argentinian added. "We need to feel that Wembley can be home". Dortmund are a great team but in our mind our mentality is to win and be aggressive from the start.

The Premier League has produced just two Champions League semi-finalists in the last five seasons, while Chelsea are the only side to have gone all the way in the past nine years.

Spurs are playing all their home games at Wembley this season, as they prepare to move into a new ground next year.

"Real Madrid are on a different level: they won the last two Champions Leagues so it's a different reality".

Dortmund have their own Wembley pain to soothe as they return to the stadium that played host to the most painful loss in their history.

"It's a tough competition with the amount of focus and energy you need, it's massive, maybe the same or more than the Premier League", he said. Previously we played in the Europa League, for 98 or 99 percent of the players, and for myself too. "It was a very painful experience because we couldn't be at the level we needed to be, but now that's not an excuse".

Nuri Sahin was part of the Dortmund team beaten by Bayern, but he is similarly looking forward to the game at Wembley. "But fortunately we have a fantastic squad and I'm sure whoever comes in will be ready to compete on the big stage", Kane said. "When you are here, the players want to fight to try to win it", Pochettino said. "It will definitely give us confidence if we go out and get results against teams like Dortmund". Remember - we had to reduce gap to the top-four sides, now we're fighting again to reduce the gap with these type of clubs in the Champions League.
