US Senate rejects bid to repeal war authorizations

After threatening to scuttle all amendments on a massive defense policy bill, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., to put a six-month expiration date on the 2001 and 2002 AUMFs that the government cites as its legal basis for operations against extremist groups in Afghanistan and the Middle East.
"All that we do to defeat al-Qaida and ISIL rests on this AUMF", he said on the Senate floor.
The authorization, which was passed in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, is the legal justification for many USA military engagements overseas, as part of what has been called the "global war on terror".
