US Senate rejects bid to repeal war authorizations

After threatening to scuttle all amendments on a massive defense policy bill, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., to put a six-month expiration date on the 2001 and 2002 AUMFs that the government cites as its legal basis for operations against extremist groups in Afghanistan and the Middle East.

"All that we do to defeat al-Qaida and ISIL rests on this AUMF", he said on the Senate floor.

Paul introduced his amendment to the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The vote will be on whether to kill Paul's amendment.

Paul's effort won him four hours of debate time to argue for his amendment, which he used to denounce "unlimited war, anywhere, anytime, any place upon the globe".

I rise today to oppose unauthorized, undeclared, and unconstitutional war.

The authorization, which was passed in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, is the legal justification for many USA military engagements overseas, as part of what has been called the "global war on terror".

"It would send a very inappropriate signal to our troops, to our allies in the fight across the globe, and also it would send an unfortunate signal to our adversaries", said Rhode Island Sen.

US Senate #AUMF vote now being counted.

"It is far too easy and convenient for this Congress to allow for an executive, whether it be a Republican or a Democrat executive, to define the parameters of war and to name new enemies that have not been before this body for debate", he said.

But Paul could find support in both parties from the corner of the Capitol that has been pressing for a new war authorization since the U.S. began military operations against ISIS in 2014. Mike Lee (R-UT), and Sen.

Paul says inaction by Congress is letting the White House unilaterally commit the nation to war.

But Flake said Tuesday he wants to move through the committee and not through Paul's amendment that would repeal the current measures. "I'd rather do it in a deliberative fashion". "I don't think there was a single member of the senate, either party, on the floor who would have believed that that's what we were voting for". The Republican leader called on regional powers to step up their contribution to the US -led battle against the Taliban and the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) in Afghanistan.

Though senators are expected to approve small tweaks to the bill, it is not clear that any of the several amendments will earn enough support to be adopted. Kirsten Gillibrand and Maine Republican Sen.

The Senate was set to consider Wednesday a proposal created to restrict President Donald Trump from wielding extraordinary powers that have allowed the U.S.to wage wars across the globe in the name of fighting terrorism since the early 21st century.

Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin of IL and Kamala Harris of California have proposed an amendment to protect military personnel who are recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) authorization.
