Massive Mexico temblor kills 217, many trapped under debris

At least 217 people are dead after a powerful 7.1 magnitude quake struck the central state of Puebla, Mexico, near the capital of Mexico City Tuesday.

Pea Nieto said he was closely coordinating with the governors of Mexico City, Puebla and Morelos, the cities that suffered the most damage, reports Efe.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at 1:14 p.m. Tuesday, about 76 miles southeast of Mexico City.

At least 25 people, most of whom were children, died inside a private school that collapsed in the quake.

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said buildings fell at 44 sites in the capital alone as high-rises across the city swayed and twisted and hundreds of thousands of panicked people ran into the streets, according to The Associated Press. Mexican President Pena Nieto has called a meeting of the National Emergency Committee and said the Mexican government is evaluating the situation to coordinate response measures.

He said another 30 to 40 people remained trapped, while 11 children have been rescued so far.

Children can be heard screaming as they are trapped between concrete slabs in Mexico City.

In addition, a delegation of 50 soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces Home Front Command is scheduled to leave for to Mexico City on Wednesday afternoon to assist in the aftermath of the natural disaster.

Many others, in areas where multi-storey blocks had concertinaed flat, dug with their bare hands as they waited for specialist machinery to arrive. It came less than two weeks after another powerful quake caused 90 deaths in the country's south.

It is the second quake to hit Mexico this month.
