Spain's Attorney General: Catalan President May Face Arrest

The orders to close down the websites supporting the vote, which has been declared illegal by the Spanish Constitutional Court, was given by the Catalan High Court and among those to be closed is the website of the Catalan National Assembly.

The situation in Catalonia deteriorated last week, when Spain's Civil Guard detained over a dozen of people in a raid related to the preparations for the independence vote.

In an order to police issued on Monday, the prosecutor's office said they would take the names of anyone participating in the vote and confiscate relevant documents.

During a joint news conference with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in Washington, Trump said it would be "foolish" for Catalonia not to stay in Spain.

But the unrelenting opposition from Madrid means such a result would go all but unrecognised, potentially setting up a new phase of the dispute.

Spain's Prosecutor General Jose Manuel Maza on Monday did not rule out possible detention of Catalan President Carles Puigdemont over steps toward the region's independence referendum, which has been deemed illegal by Madrid. The Mossos were also instructed to seize ballot boxes or papers which could be used in Sunday's vote.

Another 85 sites are in the process of being closed, judicial sources said.

The pro-separatist camp has been buoyed by editorials published in The Financial Times and several other foreign newspapers backing a legal referendum in Catalonia or calling for dialogue.

Faced with these actions, the separatist leaders of this wealthy northeastern region of Spain, home to around 7.5 million people, have accused Madrid of "repression".

Meanwhile police visited the office of the mayor of Oliana, Miquel Sala, one of the over 700 mayors under investigation for pledging to cooperate with the referendum.

"We will let the government and the people there work it out, and we will work with whatever government or entity that comes out of it", Nauert said.

Spain's democratic constitution of 1978, which was approved by more than 90 percent of Catalan voters, gave wide autonomy to the regions but affirmed "the indissoluble unity of the Spanish nation".

Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will miss an European Union summit in order to deal with the referendum, a government source said.

"We denounce this as an operation of state abuse", they said.

They will be released pending further questioning by a judge, he said.
