Former USC coach suspended after Feds file charges

Four assistant coaches from top basketball programs across the country have been arrested on federal charges after allegations they took bribes.

"He's a brother that I never had, a great friend and a tremendous coach, and he will be standing here one day", Boynton said of Evans at his introductory press conference in March.

Person, Evans and Richardson were suspended by their respective universities, while USC said it put Bland on leave and hired former FBI Director Louis Freeh to conduct an internal probe.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joon Kim said these charges paint an ugly picture of college basketball.

"I want to reiterate that Oklahoma State University was shocked by the allegations made yesterday against one of our assistant men's basketball coaches", Holder said in Wednesday's statement.

Prosecutors said that while some of the bribe money went to athletes and their families, some went to coaches, to get them to use their influence over their potentially NBA-bound players. After playing at Drake, Evans played professionally in Europe and South America.

Court papers describe a secretly recorded meeting at a Manhattan hotel last December where Person told an Auburn player that he knew some of his help was "a violation ... of rules, but this is how the National Basketball Association players get it done, they get early relationships, and they form partnerships, they form trust". He will be staying with us as the associate head coach at Oklahoma State University.

The scheme involved Evans allegedly taking bribes from these advisers to get his players to sign with their agencies.

Paul Haagen, co-director of Duke University's Center for Sports Law and Policy, said the charges reflect pressure on coaches to recruit players, and on apparel companies to sign up future stars like Michael Jordan, the NBA Hall of Famer long associated with Nike Inc.

"We have reached out to the NCAA", Kim said.

Evans followed former K-State coaches Frank Martin to SC, then when to his current job at Oklahoma State when Brad Underwood was named head coach there. "None of the coaches asked a single question about his track record in handling players' money". Of course, we will cooperate with investigators and we look forward to justice being done in this case. "Because this is an ongoing criminal matter, we will have no further comment".
