Ceppi feels Infrastructure will be U-17 World Cup's biggest legacy

The home team will compete in a FIFA World cup for the first time across any age-group.

When captain Amarjit Singh and his boys step onto the field at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Friday, it will be close to six decades since any Indian football team appeared in a FIFA competition.

The FIFA U-17 World Cup kicks off in India on Friday, with the host nation taking on the United States of America in New Delhi, and the team's spirits have been boosted by a message from one of the country's biggest sports stars.

India play their first match on October 6 against USA. The highest overall tournament attendance was in China in 1985 in the inaugural tournament, with 1,231,000 fans flocking to the stadiums, averaging 38,469 fans per game. "Go, get it boys, make us proud", stated Virat Kohli in the video. The following year he took charge of the U-17 team for the first time, guiding them to a fourth-place finish at the 2004 AFC U-17 Championship.

The Mission 11 million, a football initiative aimed at taking the game to almost 15,000 schools in 37 cities across the country, was set rolling by former sports minister Vijay Goel and All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel at the Nehru Stadium here earlier this year.

This is the first time India are taking part in a Federation Internationale de Football Association event in any age group. The Ghana team, on the other hand, reached here from Abu Dhabi where they had based for training ahead of the U-17 World Cup. With this tournament, India will also be setting a world record of hosting matches in farthest venues.

The FIFAU-17 World Cup begins October 6, and will be played in various locations such as New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata and Margao in Goa.
