Tirunesh Dibaba dominates, Galen Rupp ends drought at Chicago Marathon

Defending champion Abel Kirui crossed the line 28 seconds behind in second place, with fellow Kenyan Bernard Kipyego taking third spot. "It's just a great day". Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba earned the victory in 2:18:31.

"This is my third marathon and I'm very happy to have won here", Dibaba said.

The last American to win the race was Khalid Khannouchi in 2002. "I worked very hard for this".

The Chicago Marathon rivals the New York City Marathon in popularity, with an estimated 1.7 million spectators lining the course according to race officials. Dibaba was out in front on her own, having gapped Kosgei, while Kirui, Rupp and Ethiopian Sisay Lemma were in contention duking out who would finish where on the men's podium.

Rupp has competed in three Olympic events, medaling in the 10,000 meters in London's 2012 Olympics.

Kenya's Dennis Kimetto, world record holder from his 2014 Berlin Marathon triumph in 2:02:57 and the 2013 Chicago champion, led at the halfway mark in 1:05:49 but began limping soon after and by 25km was off the pace for good. I really wanted to wait. "I feel like I've been second so many times in my career, just always this close so I just am so thrilled that I was able to pull it out here".

But ultimately she came up slightly short of the course record. The men's pack at that pace was as large as 26 people.

The time made her the second-fastest American marathoner in history behind only Deena Kastor, who clocked 2:19.36 in 2006. The Kenyan fell back with 10km remaining, leaving Dibaba alone to the end. Kenya's Brigid Kosgei was second, and American Jordan Hasay third.
