Senator Dianne Feinstein Will Seek Sixth Term At Age 84

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California announced that she will seek reelection in 2018, silencing speculation that she meant to retire after holding the office for more than 25 years.

A poll from UC Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies found that 45 percent of registered voters would cast their ballots for Feinstein should she made a decision to run again.

Feinstein, who was the mayor of San Francisco for a decade before her Senate career, has been among the most outspoken voices on issues like gun violence and torture during her long legislative tenure.

Progressives are purportedly frustrated enough about her views on President Trump, DACA and single-payer health care to mount a challenge for her seat.

Feinstein also announced the run on Twitter, using an unverified account that remained dormant since 2013.

She was first elected in 1992.

Rep. Ro Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley in Congress, told Jeff Stein of Vox that Feinstein "is out of touch with the grassroots of our party on economic policy and foreign policy". The No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, has said he's open to legislation and that he'd spoken with Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley, who was interested in holding a hearing. "The fact that the establishment is rallying around her reelection shows that D.C. insiders continued to privilege protecting one of their own over the voters concerns [sic]".

Feinstein said her narrowly-tailored proposal should be sufficient to earn bipartisan support, but so far, no Republican has signed on as a co-sponsor.

Garcetti has repeatedly praised the work of Feinstein, saying he hoped she would run again.

Sen. Kamala Harris, California's other senator, released a statement supporting Feinstein's reelection bid.

The rising liberal star Sen.

"I am all in!" she wrote. Some of the Democrats now running for governor, including State Treasurer John Chiang, hadn't ruled out switching to a Senate campaign.
