Bimal Gurung plans to enter Darjeeling before Oct 30: Intel

Five houses belonging to supporters of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) faction led by Bimal Gurung were gutted in a fire in Patlaybas near Darjeeling, a stronghold of Gurung.

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh today held the Mamata Banerjee government responsible for the death of sub-inspector Amitabha Malik, alleging that it had sent police personnel "who were not properly trained" to capture GJM chief Bimal Gurung. It left a police officer and a civilian killed and several others injured. A few GJM supporters, too, received injuries in the firing.

Sharma said, during the clashes, Gurung and his close associates fled to the neighbouring state of Sikkim. The police recovered 6 AK 47 and some nine mm pistol and around 500 rounds of cartridges from the spot.

According to him, intelligence reports suggest that Gurung has been in touch with Maoists and other North East-based insurgent groups.

They were searching for the head of the party Bimal Gurung, who has been on the run since government prosecutors brought terrorism charges against him over a 104-day protest that crippled the region and left almost a dozen people dead.

Around evening, the police found another large cache of arms and ammunition in Pedong of Kalimpong district.

The police had gone to the area looking for Gurung, following a specific information that the GJM supremo and those loyal to him were hiding there. Bimal Gurung should not be allowed to divide the state. The state government should go for tripartite talks to solve the Darjeeling issue.

The region's Nepali-speaking Gorkha community has always been holding protests demanding a separate Gorkhaland state within India to protect their Himalayan culture.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to attend the October 16 meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna.
