1.3M Ford F-Series Pickups Recalled Over Faulty Door Latches

Reuters reported that Ford has recalled over 5 million vehicles since 2016 that had issues with door latches - and that a spokeswoman for the company said customers with affected vehicles will hear from the company next month. Ford testing shows that the faulty latches are failing after exposure to water, which could cause the door to open randomly.

Customers will be notified by letter to let them know they are part of the recall beginning the week of November 13.

In an effort to remedy the problem, Ford dealerships will be instructed to inspect the door latches and actuation cables.

Ford's F-150 pickup truck is one of the country's most popular vehicles and a perennial best-seller. The company initially alerted dealers in 2015 about the issue.

The Center for Auto Safety, a nonprofit group founded by Ralph Nader, on Monday called on Ford to recall more than 1 million Explorer SUVs for alleged risk of carbon-monoxide poisoning.

The automaker says the repairs will cost Ford $267 million.

The F-Series has been the company's best-selling vehicle, and the Super Duty, made exclusively at Kentucky Truck Plant, has helped prop up profits because consumers increasingly are opting for higher-end models of the work truck. The second-largest USA automaker also said its full-year adjusted earnings per share will still be in the range of $1.65 to $1.85 a share.

The problem is a door latch issue that could allow the door to open while the truck is in motion.

In September 2016, Ford said it was taking a $640 million charge for its expanded side-door latch recalls.
