Buffon to retire unless Juventus win Champions League in 2017-18

The world's greatest goalkeeper has been on the losing side in three Champions League finals, including two of the last three, with Barcelona and Real Madrid cruelly breaking gorgeous Gianluigi's heart in 2015 and this year.

The goalkeeper, who began his career at Parma before joining Juventus in 2001, was named as the goalkeeper of the year at Fifa's The Best awards on Monday.

The 39-year old said that he would be a part of FIFA Club World Cup next year provided his team wins the European tournament. It was not enough to win in Europe and I hope that this year we can go one better, both with Juventus and the national team.

With 10 Serie A championships and the 2006 FIFA World Cup under his belt, it is no surprise why many rank him as the best modern goalkeeper and among the greatest of all time.

"This is my last season and I'm pretty sure of the choices I make", he told Sky Sports in Italy, adding he wouldn't change anything just to have a couple more years as no.1 for club and country.

"But I think with a goalkeeper like him behind it is normal that next year I'll stand aside".

If Buffon will not be able to win the Champions League, his farewell match, most likely, will take place at the world Championships in Russian Federation. I am proud of it.

The Italy worldwide has claimed he will retire at the age of 40 after next summer's World Cup finals in Russian Federation - should Italy advance past Sweden in a play-off next month.

'I want to say thanks to all the people who voted for me and I think the previous year has been a fantastic season for Juventus but it wasn't enough to win in Europe.
