The saga of the patent war between Apple and Samsung is nearly as old as the iPhone itself.
"Slide to unlock" is the feature that most of smartphone users are familiar with, the court battle also focused on other patents-like an Apple feature that turned data into links (think phone numbers).
Back in 2014, a California federal court awarded Apple a $120 million penalty to be paid by Samsung, The decision was overturned by the Federal Circuit, but the same court reinstated the damages later in October 2016.
In April this year, Huawei had defeated Samsung in a patent battle in Chian where the Galaxy 8 maker was ordered to pay 80 million Yuan (USD 12 million) to Huawei for infringing its cellular smartphone technologies. It is interesting that it comes at a time when the "slide to unlock" feature on Apple phones has stopped being the primary way to unlock the Apple devices.
Samsung was found to have infringed both patents. That amount excluded another $382 million in damages for allegations that Samsung copied Apple's packaging materials. In all, Apple had filed complaint for violation of 5 patents, but were awarded damages in three of them. We're guessing that every court decision made in the future, as evidenced by history, will be appealed, so don't expect Apple vs. Samsung to settle down anytime soon. In fact, the case is so old, Apple doesn't even use the "slide to unlock" functionality on its iPhones anymore.
But that won't lessen Samsung's pain of the $120 million payout. This is one of the numerous cases concerning Apple and Samsung since 2011.
The company had noted that one of Apple's patents at issue in the case had been invalidated by courts "and yet today's decision allows Apple to unjustly profit from this patent, stunts innovation and places competition in the courtroom rather than the marketplace".
