One way to get bumped from jury duty: be Barack Obama

Barack Obama returned to Chicago Wednesday to perform a civic duty.

Former President Barack Obama arrives for jury duty in the Daley Center.

Unlike his fellow prospective jurors, Obama got to take the private elevator used by judges to get to the 17th-floor jury assembly room.

One group was called and the rest of the 220 jurors - including the 44th president - were dismissed, though Evans added that Obama said he was willing to serve had he been selected.

Obama arrived at the justice center in Chicago by motorcade, according to several US media reports that showed him entering the building and being greeted by people at the courthouse.

No longer the world's most powerful politician, Obama approached the court like an ordinary American waiting to carry out his civic duty.

Obama watched the entire 20-minute educational video during his time at the Daley Center, Evans said. "If the former president can come, anyone can come", he continued.

Mr Obama is not the first United States president to show up for service that some Americans either dread or find excuses to avoid.

Obama isn't the first high-profile person to appear for jury duty in Chicago.

Obama still owns a home at 51st and Greenwood, and is registered to vote in Chicago, although he and his family live in D.C. Like Obama, Neither landed on a jury.

For his day of public service, he will presumably receive the standard payment for every Cook County juror, which is $17.20. In 2004, Oprah Winfrey was on a Chicago jury that convicted a man of murder.
