At least 16 people were killed while seven others were still missing after a boat carrying 38 people on board capsized at Pavitra Sangamam ghat in river Krishna in Vijayawada on Sunday.

The passengers were travelling to Pavitra Sangamam to see a daily ritual when the boat lost its balance.

The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) are undertaking search and rescue operations.

Reports say that 14 bodies have been recovered so far.

The boat was proceeding from Bhavani Islands to Pavithra Sanghamam on Sunday evening. However, locals allege that many boats do not have sufficient number of life jackets and carry more passengers than their sanctioned capacity. The panic-stricken passengers tried to rush to one side, but the inexperienced driver failed to control and the boat overturned.
