Sessions mulling second special counsel to investigate Republican concerns, letter shows

In response, Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd wrote that Sessions had "directed senior federal prosecutors to evaluate certain issues raised in your letters", and those prosecutors would "report directly to the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General, as appropriate, and will make recommendations as to whether any matters not now under investigation should be opened, whether any matters now under investigation require further resources, or whether any matters merit the appointment of a Special Counsel". Mr Sessions said the Trump campaign "was a brilliant campaign in many ways".

"After reading his account, and to the best of my recollection, I believe that I wanted to make clear to him that he was not authorized to represent the campaign with the Russian government, or any other foreign government, for that matter", Sessions said on Tuesday. His letter, signed by 19 other Republicans, said that Judiciary Committee members were concerned that Mueller might not have a broad enough mandate to investigate other election-related matters, which he said included actions taken by Comey, Clinton and Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

Mr Page's trip has drawn scrutiny in inquiries into Russia's meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

And at his latest appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sessions seemed to shift his position again.

"You can't x-ray people's minds to see what they were thinking and what they knew, so perjury can be a hard crime to prove", said Bennett Gershman, a professor of criminal law at Pace Law School.

Those questions have only deepened since the guilty plea last month of George Papadopoulos, a former Trump adviser who served on the council Sessions chaired and who proposed arranging a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Since Mueller's probe began, numerous Trump advisors have acknowledged interactions with Russian intermediaries.

As the time Conyers was allotted to question Sessions drew to a close, he noted that at his confirmation hearing, Sessions promised to recuse himself from any investigations involving Hillary Clinton.

All are Republicans who have apparently copped to smoking pot. We know the Clinton campaign, the Democratic National Committee, paid for, through the law firm, paid for the dossier [that alleges Trump-Russia ties].

"I'm not able to reveal internal investigatory matters", Sessions said.

He struggled to answer when asked the same about white groups. Democrats have said they plan to ask Sessions about what they see as the discrepancies, some of which he has yet to address publicly.

Rep. John Conyers Jr., Michigan Democrat, displayed copies of a series of recent tweets from Mr. Trump in which the president called for an investigation into Russia's 2010 purchase of uranium rights and donations to the Clinton Foundation while Mrs. Clinton led the State Department.

"You can be sure that they will be done without political influence and they will be done correctly and properly", Sessions said at the hearing Tuesday.
