Saad Hariri Arrives in Cairo to Address Crisis in Lebanon

Referring to this month's sudden resignation of Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri, Aoun said the "last governmental crisis" had "passed" but it was not a trivial issue.

Hariri announced his resignation during a visit to Saudi Arabia but has yet to return home. He has said he'd be back in Beirut in time for Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday.

Lebanon has remained in the throes of an unprecedented political crisis since Hariri announced his resignation on November 4 during a televised address from Saudi Arabia, accusing Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah of sowing "sedition" in the region and "meddling" in Arab affairs.

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has visited the grave of his father, the late Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.

Hariri is now in Paris, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday.

According to Al-Akhbar's sources, France insists that PM Hariri remains in office, expressing worries about any governmental vacuum that results from the resignation, "which may lead into a political, security and economic instability".

Media reports and analysts say el-Sissi and Macron have been trying to convince Hariri to negotiate with other Lebanese leaders a way out of the crisis, thus preventing the country's delicate political balance from unraveling and plunging it into a prolonged crisis that would fuel tension in the region.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has criticised the Arab League for supporting Saudi Arabia and its role in the war in Yemen. The Shiite militant group is a key member of Hariri's ruling coalition and Lebanon's single most dominant force. He is expected to return to Beirut on Wednesday. Sisi and Aoun "underscored the importance of preserving Lebanon's stability as well as upholding Lebanon's national interest".
