Record high Thanksgiving weather bakes Southern California

Temperatures soared into the 90s across a large swath of Southern California in an autumn heat wave that peaked Wednesday.

San Diego came within one degree Thursday of tying the highest temperature ever recorded on Thanksgiving, topping out at 86 degrees on a day when records were tied or broken across the county.

Fresno reached 76 degrees in the 3 o'clock hour Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to drop a few degrees Thursday, but it'll still be about 20-25 degrees higher than the average in many communities, National Weather Service meteorologist Rich Thompson said.

Wednesday's high peaked at 80 degrees, the highest ever recorded in the valley on November 22 and 17 degrees warmer than the normal temperature for this time of year, the weather service said.

The hot and dry conditions stem from an upper-level ridge of high pressure hovering over the area, which is causing desert air from the northeast to flow toward the Southern California coast, Sirard said.

Happy Wednesday! Our dry weather continues as the dry cold front has pushed across our area earlier this morning. This will begin to bring temperatures down a notch Monday, with Valley highs in the low 80s.

If Thursday's high in downtown Los Angeles reaches 90, as forecast, it would tie a record set on November 23, 1903. Long Beach is expected to top out at 89 degrees; the record high was 85 in 1990.

The warmest Thanksgiving in Flagstaff was 67 degrees set in 1954.
