According to NCRB's 2016 data, a total of 136 murders due to caste conflict have been reported in India in 2016 whereas, the number of the same in 2015 was 828. In seven cases, the accused was a relative, and in 12 cases, neighbours.

West Bengal recorded the maximum number of crimes registered with foreigners as offenders, at 520 cases, while Delhi recorded 143.

In this category Orissa is second after New Delhi which reported a crime rate of 43.6 in this category.

The national capital recorded the highest crime rate (974.9), followed by Kerala a (727.6), Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Assam in 2016 in IPC crimes.

Out of all the categories of "violent crimes" - murder, kidnapping and abduction, rioting, robbery and dacoity - there has been an increase only in cases kidnapping and abduction.

Uttar Pradesh also saw the highest number of crimes against women with 14.5 percent (49,262 cases) of the total cases. All 114 persons arrested for crimes against children were chargesheeted.

While kidnapping and abduction accounted for 52.3% of the cases, cases under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO) were at a disturbing 34.4%.

The national capital also recorded the highest crime rate of 182.1 compared to the national average of 77.2 and reported the highest number of murders - 479 out of 2,194 cases (21.8 percent), followed by Bengaluru 10.4 percent (229 cases) and Patna 8.9 percent (195 cases).

Madhya Pradesh comes out top with 20.6% of the total number of cases in 2016 followed by Maharashtra - 18.4%.

During 2016, IPC crimes reported charge sheeting rate of 72.9% and conviction rate of 46.8% in the country.

This year, a total of 8,132 cases of human trafficking were reported in the country with West Bengal reporting the highest number of cases (3,579) sharing almost 44% of the total cases followed by Rajasthan (1,422) sharing 17.9% of such cases in the country. Along with losing this despicable rank for the first time in the previous two years, Mumbai has also been recorded as a city having a lower crime rate per one lakh population than Delhi and Bengaluru and is now behind Kochi (2nd), Nagpur (8th), and Pune (12th) at the 15th position.

Delhi registered 40 per cent (1,996) of the total number of rape cases in the 19 cities and almost 29 per cent cases each of cruelty meted out by husband and his relatives and dowry deaths across the country. In all, 1,226 crimes were registered against foreigners from 47 countries in 2016. The highest number of cases among metro cities against juveniles (with 2,368 cases out of 6,645) and most economic offences (5,942) were reported from Delhi.
