Netanyahu slams Iran in statement about airstrike on base in Syria

Syria's air defense system blocked an unspecified number of Israeli missiles overnight, Syrian state television reported Saturday, according to Reuters.

Syria's state news agency SANA said the surface-to-surface missiles, which were fired shortly after midnight on December 1, caused material damage.

Earlier in the day, pro-government media outlets had said the air defences were triggered by a missile attack, while people in the capital heard explosions in different areas.

Al-Masdar posted a video that it claimed showed an intercept of an Israeli missile.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor of the war, said the missiles, presumably Israeli, targeted "positions of the Syrian regime and its allies" southwest of Damascus.

Meanwhile Times of Israel reported the incident quoting Arab media.

Yet in reporting last night's Israeli strike on Syria, the BBC uncritically referenced its own prior unconfirmed "claim" to paint a picture that Israel is actually taking action against Iran and Hezbollah: "Israel has hit weapons sites before, in a bid to prevent arms being transferred to Syria's Lebanese ally Hezbollah".

The Syrian conflict began in March 2011 against the Assad government, but it morphed into a civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people.

It says that Israeli fighter jet was flying at a low altitude over Lebanon's Baalbek region near Syrian border when Syrian missiles were launched.
