Strong cold front sends temperatures plunging — FIRST ALERT FORECAST

A cold front moves in Tuesday, bringing widespread rain. Temperatures will drop to 40° overnight. Rain chances this afternoon will remain low at 30%, but you may want to carry the umbrella for the chance of a couple of showers. One should expect few, if any, cold temperature records to be set or tied during the coming two weeks, even though temperatures will run below average in the eastern half of the lower 48 states.

For East Coast snow lovers, it would be a huge disappointment if the next 14 days or more turn out to be cold and dry, despite most of the pieces being in place for a big storm.

By Friday morning, up to eight inches of snow has been forecast in the Scottish Highlands by STV weather presenter Sean Batty. Low temperatures will reach the teens and 20s with wind chill temperatures in the single digits.

At midnight on Friday, virtually every coastline across the nation will be engulfed in snow with low-level settling snow possible "anywhere", according to Weather Outlook.

RAIN ARRIVES TUESDAY: Rain is a pretty much guarantee on Tuesday as a strong cold front enters the area.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy with a high near 33 degrees. However, if rain falls for long enough, the temperature of the air will start to fall.

Elsewhere lows in the middle to upper 30s will be felt as far south as the coastline.

Computer guidance is mixed on the extended forecast, but there are at least some indications that the much-colder weather could last well into mid or late December. Highest temperatures of just 3 to 6 degrees are expected.

From Friday it will feel bitterly cold with temperatures struggling to get above freezing.
