Michael Flynn Vowed to End Russia Sanctions, According to Whistleblower
Dec 07, 2017, 01:58
In a letter from Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) to Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Cummings claims the whistleblower said Flynn messaged a former business colleague, whom he worked with on a project with Russian Federation to "build nuclear power plants in the Middle East", that the plan was "good to go" because the sanctions would be "ripped up" as one of Trump's first acts in office.
Representative Elijah Cummings, the senior Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said a whistleblower had contacted his office with evidence that Flynn was pushing to remove sanctions on Russian Federation in order to spur the ambitious nuclear plan ahead.
But he asked Gowdy to issue a subpoena to the White House for documents related to Flynn, saying that the committee has "credible allegations" that Flynn "sought to manipulate the course of global nuclear policy for the financial gain of his former business partners".
On Wednesday Cummings sent the whistleblower's account to committee chairman Trey Gowdy with a request that he issue subpoenas to White House officials, including chief of staff John Kelly, as well as Flynn, Copson and their other business associates for material that would corroborate the whistleblower's statements.
The witness told congressional investigators that he was "extremely uncomfortable" with the conversation, Cummings wrote, and took brief notes about the discussion during the inaugural event.
Flynn's lawyer did not respond to a request for comment on the latest claims.
"Mike has been putting everything in place for us", Copson said, according to the witness, adding: "This is going to make a lot of very wealthy people". Copson was working at the time with Flynn on a project to build nuclear reactors in the Middle East, and Flynn reported in August that he served as an "advisor" to Copson's company between 2015-2016.
Flynn pled guilty last week to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding conversations with Russians.
"Mr. Copson explained [to the whistleblower] that General Flynn was making sure that sanctions would be 'ripped up", Cummings wrote.
The whistleblower also alleges that Copson said Flynn had assured him that US sanctions on Russian Federation would be "ripped up" as soon as Trump was inside the White House. On Inauguration Day, according to the whistle-blower, Mr. Flynn texted the former business associate to say that the project was "good to go".
Reached Wednesday, Flynn's attorney declined to comment. He was ousted as national security advisor after only 24 days on the job. And one of the companies involved in the project covered his travel expenses and wrote him a check for $25,000 for the trip, though it's not clear if Flynn cashed the check.
Perhaps most intriguingly of all, Cummingswrites that he told Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team about all this some time ago - and that they asked him to delay publicly revealing this information "until they completed certain investigation steps".
