'Annihilation' trailer discovers mutated monsters in Area X

Paramount Pictures has now released the second trailer for Annihilation online, with Portman's character and her drive to learn what happened to her husband (played by Oscar Isaac) in "The Shimmer" at the center of the action. Who will fight on the front-lines against death: soldiers, politicians, militia?

The group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. "I knew that it was planned as a trilogy by the author, but there was only the manuscript for the first book". Annihilation, based on the book and/or series by Jeff VanderMeer, takes that idea to another level entirely.

Watch the official trailer for #Annihilation starring Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac. A distraught Portman agrees to join the 12th, all-female team, and you see the world beyond the curtain-a place of exquisite beauty, filled with freaky flora and fauna mutations, and, in one quick cut, a deadly predator.

Annihilation is about a group of scientists - played by Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, and Tuva Novotny - who explore a odd part of world where "occurrences" happen.

Like Alien or The Descent (a 2005 all-female horror film which still holds the record for most onscreen dialogue said by women to women), Annihilation makes a villain out of mutation and the next stage of life. They would do well to build the hype as the novels do. 2014's Southern Reach Trilogy (and Annihilation in particular) brought him some of his most pronounced acclaim and success, and the marriage of the modern classic to director Alex Garland (of Ex Machina fame) seems destined for greatness. Today, the studio released a new trailer that shows off the utter strangeness of Area X. And how far will humanity go to save themselves?
