Former Miami Hurricane Devin Hester Officially Retires From NFL

- Three first-team All-Pro seasons and four Pro Bowls from 2006-2014. A collective sigh of relief could be heard from special teams coaches around the league after the news of Hester retiring came about.

It's actually understandable. Hester didn't play this season, so they probably thought he was retired at that point.

Legendary Chicago Bears kick returner Devin Hester officially announced his retirement from the National Football League on Tuesday, and support for the electric play-maker poured out on Twitter all day.

Hester, 35, announced his intentions on Twitter - with a touch of humor. Chicago was where he was known as one of the best return men of all time.

"To all of the Bears fans, you brought me in and made a Florida boy feel at home in the Midwest from Day 1", Hester wrote.

Because of his success in the return game and blazing speed, Hester became the first player in Madden NFL history to earn a 100 speed rating. He also spent time with the Falcons, Ravens and Seahawks.

"I'd also especially like to thank Coach Lovie Smith for taking a chance on me in the draft and getting this whole thing started".

A second-round pick out of Miami in 2006, Hester played eight seasons for the Bears before spending two years with the Atlanta Falcons.

In a special teams meeting the night before the game, Toub, then the Bears special teams coordinator, told his players just that.

Since this is his official retirement announcement, Hester will be eligible for the Hall of Fame in Canton five years from now. Hester should be more likely to put on a gold jacket like past star returners like Sanders (Class of 2011) and Rod Woodson (2009).

Hester is a Hall of Fame talent, but that is no guarantee that will end with him being a Hall of Fame player.
