Scotland's weather: Little hope for a white Christmas

Friday brought snow for many, Saturday brought freezing rain for most and next up is more snow and rain, but at least without the ice this time.

So the chances of a white Christmas - defined as an inch or more of snow on the ground, even if it's from previous storms - this year aren't high. Our wind chill will knock about five degrees off our air temperatures. Icy roads could make overnight travel slippery in portions of Warren, Morris and Sussex counties. But you still need to have an adequate supply of windshield washer fluid.

There are actually three low-pressure centers to track; one moving to Ontario, another to western NY, and a new one forming east of New Jersey. Be sure to allow some extra time for any evening/overnight travel. The details are still sketchy, but with cold air in place, there would be an opportunity for some snow depending on the ultimate track and evolution of this system. Steady snow continues across all of central MA, north to VT, NH, & ME. "3-5" is likely with 6" or higher amounts around the Seacoast and the higher terrain in Rockingham County.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect in Marion County from 9 p.m. this evening through noon on Christmas Eve.

These winds - around 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts up to 40 or 50 miles per hour - could bring down tree limbs and power lines, causing power outages for parts of the state.

The week of freezing temperatures is colder than usual, but not by much.

After that, the deep-freeze is the weather pattern to finish out 2017.

Today will be a soggy one as last minute shoppers rush out to get those pre-Christmas deals.

This storm will wind down later this evening with a few rain showers.

Just be ready to deal with the cold!

Temperatures are expected to reach 27 degrees by mid-morning and peak in the mid- to upper- 30s.
