Weather Authority: Frigid temperatures through the holiday weekend

While our New Year's Eve will be partly to mostly sunny and dry, it will be oh so cold! High temperatures have been in the 20s most of this week with wind chills in the single digits. The National Weather Service will likely issue wind chill advisories for Sunday night as forecast wind chills in some areas may dip below zero.

A strong cold front will move over the Valley Saturday night, leaving temperatures struggling to reach the freezing mark for highs on Sunday. Combining this with the cold air temperatures yields wind chills in the teens and 20s.

New Year's Day is predicted to have a high of only 25 degrees, which would be the coldest since 1940 and the sixth coldest New Year's Day on record. The wind chill will be sub-zero throughout the day.

"We're expecting anything from a dusting of snow to around 0.5" especially in areas north of I-40. Snowfall amounts in areas under the Winter Storm Warning are still on track to see at least 4 inches with pockets of 5 to 6 inches before ending later this evening. They don't get much better later in the day either.

The cold air, reinforced with another area of high pressure on Wednesday, will persist for much of next week.

The Arctic air that continues to keep temperatures well below freezing will be with us through the weekend and into the beginning of 2018. A northwest wind could gust to 40 miles per hour.

As we ring in 2018, temperatures will be near 0, dropping as low as 10 below zero by Monday morning with risky wind chills as low as 30 below zero.
