Letterman Netflix series gets Obama as first guest: See trailer

Obama's appearance on Letterman's "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction" is set for January 12, Netflix announced Friday.

Above is the first teaser trailer for the series, titled My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman.

David Letterman is returning to late night-and he's bringing some big names with him. Other guests include actor George Clooney, Nobel Prize-winning Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, rapper Jay-Z, actress Tina Fey and radio personality Howard Stern.

The streaming platform teased the new show's January 12 launch in a tweet with a lineup topped by the former United States leader: "Obama".

Netflix announced the Letterman series in August.

Netflix said the new series would consist of 60-minute episodes centred around "one extraordinary figure whom Dave finds fascinating" and that the interviews would take place both inside and outside a studio setting. In addition, Letterman will participate in field segments to dig deeper on a specific topic related to the guest featured in the episode.

Taking his usual late night hijinks in a more serious direction seems like a natural progression in Letterman's semi-retirement, as the 70-year-old comedian's material has grown more political and socially conscious in later years.

Letterman resigned from his post on the show in 2015 after almost 22 years at the helm.
