Deputy in Washington dies after being shot by burglary suspects

Someone called 911 just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday saying an intruder was inside a home in Frederickson, a suburb just southeast of Tacoma.

After arriving at the scene, McCartney chased an unidentified black male on foot before the suspect shot him and escaped.

The injured deputy was transported in critical condition to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma where he later died.

It is with incredible sadness that inform you that our deputy has passed away from his injuries.

The responding deputy encountered two burglary suspects, the department said.

A manhunt is underway, and a large containment area has been set up near the scene of the shooting to locate the other suspect.

Roads are closed from 176th Street East to 200th Street East and 38th Avenue East to Canyon Road East as the search for the suspect continues.

The suspect, who authorities described as armed and unsafe, was the subject of manhunt by K9 units in the area of 200th Sreet as the suspect is being actively searched for by K9 units.

Some roads in the area are closed. Expect roads to be closed for several hours.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department identified the deputy as Daniel McCartney, 34.
