Ibuprofen Use Linked to Male Infertility, New Study Suggests

The condition arises when the body has to boost levels of testosterone because normal production in the testes has fallen.

Separate experiments in the study using human testicular tissue in a lab dish also suggested that ibuprofen could affect testosterone production.

For the study, 14 young males, between 18 and 35 years old, took 600 milligrams of ibuprofen twice a day.

The decreased ratio of testosterone to LH created a hormonal imbalance called "compensated hypogonadism" in the endocrine system, which regulates and controls hormones. Until now, it has been primarily linked to adverse effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding, cardiovascular disorders and kidney damage. The bad news is the ibuprofen is one of a large class of related drugs that includes aspirin, and the likelihood that other drugs will have similar effects is high. The ibuprofen-poppers were instructed to take the recommended daily dosage limit of 1,200 mg day. That works out to three ibuprofen tablets per day if you're taking a typical 200mg/tablet product. Luckily, in the test subjects the condition was mild, but the researchers said people should be concerned if they use anti-inflammatory drugs regularly over long periods of time.

The detrimental effects of daily ibuprofen were almost immediate. "The risk is greater than the benefit". However, with the discovery comes the concern that long-term usage of high doses of ibuprofen might make compensated hypogonadism a permanent condition.

The French National Institute of Health and Medical Research's Bernard Jegou, a senior author of the study, said that there is no problem in taking ibuprofen for short-term pain relief.

A popular pain medication often popped by men who suffer minors aches and pains related to sports may be linked to infertility, according to a new study. "These compounds are good painkillers, but a certain amount of people in society use them without thinking of them as proper medicines".

The researchers also pointed out the risk of those with compensated hypogonadism progressing to overt primary hypogonadism, which is characterized by "low circulating testosterone and prevalent symptoms including reduced libido, reduced muscle mass and strength, and depressed mood and fatigue".

When struggling to get pregnant, couples will immediately try to find the source of the issue, but a small new study has revealed that ibuprofen could be a potential sperm killer, and it's something all trying couples should read.
