Militant Groups Using Drones As Weapon

Last Saturday, Russia's main airbase in Kheimim in the Syrian Latakia province came under a massive drone attack. It said 10 assault drones had flown toward the air base in northwestern Syria, while another three were directed against the Russian naval station on the Mediterranean Sea.

It was reportedly the single largest loss of Russian military equipment since Vladimir Putin ordered Russian forces into Syria in September 2015. It said that of the 13 drones involved, seven were shot down and six were forced to land without inflicting damage.

Peskov said everyone, including Putin, are aware that terrorists' attacks will not stop overnight.

While Russia will continue its military intervention, it will at the same time seek a peaceful resolution between the Syrian government and the opposition groups to guarantee its influence in the future of the country, Clarke said.

"In two years, the Russian armed forces, together with the Syrian army, have defeated the most lethal group of worldwide terrorists", state news agency Tass quoted Putin as saying.

In this connection the Russian Defense Ministry dispatched messages to the chief of the Turkish Armed Forces' General Staff Hulusi Akar and chief of the National Intelligence Organization Hakan Fidan. Pentagon spokesman Maj. Adrian Rankin-Galloway, however, claimed that “those devices and technologies can easily be obtained in the open market.” He later also told Sputnik that the USA already saw what it called “this type of commercial UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] technology” being used in Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) missions.

She said the incidents were proof that "whoever conducted these attacks can still penetrate regime areas and impose costs on the Russians".

"The gains the regime has made are not secure and are at high risk of being temporary".

The use of drones by militants in the battlefield persists also in Syria.

The Defence Ministry said Tuesday that the drone attacks would have required assistance from a country possessing satellite navigation technology.

The Russian Ministry of Defense had previously insinuated the United States had helped.

"They thought the base was secure, but now it seems it is vulnerable", Maxim Suchkov of the Russian International Affairs Council told The Washington Post. Adrian Rankin-Galloway appeared to pre-emptively deflect any potential criticism, arguing that "those devices and technologies can easily be obtained in the open market." . We take appropriate force protection measures to ensure Coalition forces and our partners can safely carry out their missions. Currently, the Russian military experts are analyzing the construction, technical filling and improvised explosives of the captured UAVs.

Turkey considers the attacks as serious violations of the borders agreed upon during the Astana process by the three guarantor countries, the sources said.

Ahmed said families had begun makeshift camps on the sides of roads, and were burning whatever they could find to stay warm in the winter months.
