Twitter reacts to announcement of state capture commission

The Public Protector has called on President Jacob not to limit the state capture inquiry's terms of reference to issues identified in her predecessor's report.

Kenyatta's discussion with Zuma will focus on bridging the balance of trade which is now highly in favor of South Africa.

"I welcome the president's announcement" said Madonsela.

Kenyatta is also expected to meet Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, who succeeded Zuma last month as party leader of the ruling African National Congress.

In October 2016, President Zuma made a historic State visit to Kenya which witnessed the signing of multiple agreements and Memoranda of Understanding in various sectors concerning cooperation in defense, investment, biodiversity and travel.

"The allegations that the state has been wrestled out of the hands of its real owners‚ the people of South Africa‚ is of paramount importance and are therefore deserving of finality and certainty‚" Zuma said. President Jacob Zuma's statement on Tuesday, Jan. 9 2018 says "this matter can not wait any longer" and that any further delay will make the public doubt the government's revolve to fight graft.

Maimane pointed out that Zuma was still the subject of legal scrutiny after the North Gauteng High Court recently rejected his legal challenge to the public protector's state capture report‚ which had called for a commission of inquiry to be established. This could result in an investigation that could span years and take the focus off the Gupta family.

The Guptas relocated to South Africa from India in 1993 and have allegedly used their vast wealth to wield influence over the government.

In partnership with Nedbank, one of South Africa's largest banks, companies controlled by or connected to the Gupta family extracted more than 1 billion rand (US$ 67.2 million) from Transnet, a state-owned company charged with constructing rail, port, and other transportation infrastructure, the OCCRP reported in November following a massive data leak now available to journalists worldwide.

Cape Town - Within hours of a commission of inquiry into state capture being announced, the battle began over the crucial question of exactly what should be investigated.

The North Gauteng High Court ordered at the end of previous year that the commission be set up within 30 days and the judge selected exclusively by Mogoeng, due to Zuma's conflict of interest.

Before taking office, Zuma dismayed the nation during his 2006 rape trial when he told the court he had showered after having unprotected sex with his young HIV-positive accuser to avoid, he said, contracting the virus.

According to Saxby, "in saying "there should be no area of corruption and culprit that should be spared the extent of this commission of inquiry", Zuma appears to have left the door open to an all-encompassing inquiry that could stretch back to corruption in the apartheid era".
