Spain, Portugal seize cocaine smuggled inside pineapples

On Wednesday, police in Portugal and Spain announced that they seized 745 kilograms of cocaine that were disguised as fresh pineapples.

According to News 24, The Iberian police forces arrested nine members of an global smuggling ring that transported the drug from South America.

It said that the investigation into the group began in Spain in April a year ago.

The arrest came after an operation between the two countries.

Officials said the smugglers concealed the drugs in wax containers inside hollowed out pineapples. Along with the pineapple discovery, authorities also dismantled a lab where the cocaine was being cut with additives. Just last month we saw avocados used as cover for a massive marijuana shipment, and now reports out of Europe suggest that another popular fruit was used to creatively carry hundreds of kilos of cocaine.

'This organised global group had repeatedly brought large quantities of cocaine to the European continent, ' Portuguese investigators said in a statement.

Police seized 745kg of the drug hidden in the fruit along with €400 000 (£352,000) in cash, according to Reuters.

This weird shipping method has been used before by drug smugglers. The Iberian Peninsula is a common entry point for illegal drugs before they're distributed across the continent.
