Arizona Cardinals expected to hire Steve Wilks as next head coach

Wilks, 48, took over as defensive coordinator for the Panthers last season.

Wilks will be introduced to the media during a press conference in Tempe on Tuesday.

Ian Rapoport at NFL Network is reporting Wilks blew away Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim when they met recently and he is expected to be named their new head coach, replacing the retired Bruce Arians.

Per Garafolo and CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, the Cardinals no longer have any second interviews scheduled for the head coach vacancy.

During Washington's tenure, the Panthers placed in the top 10 in sacks in five of the past six seasons. He was defensive backs coach for the Chicago Bears (2006-08) and San Diego Chargers (2009-11) before he joined Carolina under the same job title in 2012.

Wilks was considered a hot coaching candidate coming into the process, but sort of drifted to the side as Patriots coordinators Matt Patricia and Josh McDaniels got most of the heat in coaching searches. Wilks figures to bring his aggressive style of defense to the Cardinals, who were 19th in points allowed this past season. The team was sixth in the National Football League with 96 interceptions.

Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson was seemingly impressed by reports of Wilks' appointment, writing "I LOVE IT" on his Twitter page. The only caveat is that Wilks ran a 4-3 scheme in Carolina while Arizona had a 3-4 defense under Arians.
