Two dead and dozens injured as train derails in Italy

At least three people are dead and dozens injured after a train derailed near Milan during rush hour Thursday morning.

An aerial image of the scene, released by fire crews, shows one carriage has bent nearly in half after coming off the tracks, while the carriage behind has also derailed and been damaged.

The broadcaster added that up to 100 people received minor injuries, all of whom are the train's passengers.

RFI said it had detected some structural collapse in the track but that it was still unclear whether this was a cause or a outcome of the accident.

All passengers were now accounted for, the Red Cross in Italy said. Some of the injured received first aid treatment in a nearby field.

One of the injured could be seen, clothes ripped, covered with a thermal blanket and wearing an oxygen mask being evacuated by helicopter. A fire official told Reuters that up to five people may have died.

Witnesses said the train trembled for a few minutes before the accident. Then it braked suddenly and derailed.

The Trenord train left Cremona, a city about 90 kilometers south-east of Milan, at about 5:30 am (0430 GMT) and derailed at around 7 am near the suburban municipality of Pioltello.

Prosecutors rushed to the scene alongside firemen and police, questioned the train driver and opened an investigation into the accident.
