Joe McKnight killer found guilty by jury

The man accused of shooting and killing former National Football League player Joe McKnight after the two engaged in a high-speed, road-rage chase was found guilty of manslaughter by a jury Friday night.

Assistant District Attorney Seth Shute told reporters Gasser faced a possible prison term of up to 40 years when he is sentenced.

McKnight had been driving aggressively in Terrytown, La., a suburb of New Orleans, weaving in and out of traffic, and cut Gasser off. The confrontation ended at an intersection, where McKnight exited his vehicle, approached Gasser's passenger window and was shot.

His defense insisted Gasser feared for his life after McKnight reached into Gasser's passenger side window, and shot McKnight in self defense. McKnight was just 28-years-old.

Gasser, 56, faces up to 40 years in prison on the heels of a road-rage confrontation on December 1, 2016, in Terrytown, which is just outside New Orleans.

Gasser avoided conviction on an initial charge of second-degree murder.

Court heard how the two men chased one another in their vehicles with each giving one another the finger while yelling obscenities before both vehicles stopped and McKnight was shot.

Defense attorney Matthew Goetz said he would appeal. "Gasser said, 'I'm not going to let it go.' If either of them had let it go, we wouldn't be here today".

Gasser shot McKnight after what prosecutors said was a road rage incident that included aggressive driving along a five mile route.

Shute acknowledged that McKnight had a hand on the open, passenger side window of Gasser's auto before he was shot.

A top recruit in the class of 2007, McKnight rushed 347 times for 2,213 yards and 13 touchdowns, and caught 66 passes for 542 yards and 2 touchdowns in 3 seasons at USC. In CFl, he played two games for the Edmonton Eskimos and three for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Gasser never left the shooting scene and was initially freed after more than eight hours of questioning.
