Former Governor John Engler Named as Interim Michigan State University President

Nassar, once a world-renowned sports physician who treated the US's top Olympic female gymnasts, was a Michigan State University doctor.

Several student liaisons spoke during the meeting, agreeing with faculty that Engler was not the right choice for interim president.

A MI judge says more than 265 people have come forward to say they were sexual assault victims of disgraced former sports doctor Larry Nassar.

A joint statement from faculty leaders accused the school's administration of placing "political expediency and institutional branding" above the faculty and student body's need to heal from the scandal. Students disrupted the meeting as the board selected former MI governor John Engler as interim president.

Local legislators and others have called for the school's board of trustees to resign, while one trustee, Brian Mosallam, demanded on Twitter on Monday that the university's general counsel step down.

"It appears that not only were none of our suggestions heeded by the Board of Trustees, we learned of their apparent decision to select Gov. Engler through public media".

Very few people would disagree that Michigan State University needs to clean house and start fresh with new leadership and new blood in the wake of the horrific Larry Nassar scandal.

ESPN's investigative report says there has been an institutional failure to respond to accusations of sexual abuse and violence within the larger athletic department, including by Izzo's men's basketball program and coach Mark Dantonio's football program, and the university as well.

Engler is a Michigan State alum who served as the state's 46th governor from 1991 to 2003.

"We will meet with every victim", Schuette said.

Also coming on board is another former governor, Jim Blanchard, 75.

McCabe said they would call for a no-confidence vote in the Board of Trustees.

"What we got were shady backroom dealings, which resulted in the political appointment of a straight, white, wealthy male who is just conservative enough to keep our elected officials down Michigan Avenue pacified for a little while longer", he told the Journal.

Also last week, Athletic Director Mark Hollis announced his retirement.

That would allow Gov. Rick Snyder to appoint an interim board to serve until elections can be held.

Joining me now to help unpack all of this is Matt Mencarini.

But Ingham County State Senator Curtis Hertel says this job is different than being Governor, and he wants a meeting with Engler to discuss the differences.

At age 69, taking on the unforeseen management challenge of turning around a university in a freefall crisis of public confidence "wasn't something I was seeking", Engler said Wednesday after MSU's board of four Republican and four Democrats unanimously made him the interim president. Before the vote, all expressed their support for Engler.
