Khan was also associated with Atif Amin, who was killed in the encounter, the police said.

"His wife did not know about his involvement with terror blasts and his work as an Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist".

A native of Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh, Khan carried a bounty of '15 lakh on his head by the police.

"He was involved in many bombing incidents", Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwaha said, according to ANI.

The dreaded gunfight, known as Batla House encounter, took place six days after serial bomb blasts rocked Delhi, claiming the lives of at least 30 people.

The arrested was made by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police.

Other than the Batla House encounter, he was wanted in bomb blast cases in Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. He has been on the run since the September 2008 Batla House encounter. Two others were arrested from the spot.

The Special Cell of the Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested a top Indian Mujahideen terrorist who was wanted for his links in several terror attacks in the country. In all, the police said, these explosives had killed 165 people and injured 535.

Accordingly, a team under ACP Govind Sharma laid a trap and nabbed Khan near the Sharda Inter College in Banbasa on Tuesday evening.

Later, he came in touch with a Nepali resident Nizam and with his help crossed the Indo-Nepal border from Bihar into the Himalayan country, he said.

Kushwaha said that after Khan escaped from Batla House, he remained in India for a month before fleeing to Nepal. In three years, from 2014 till 2017, he met many IM sympathisers and in 2017, he started coming to India, police said. He had planned to teach them a lesson and planted IEDs across the Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad courts which killed 15 dead, police said.
