Rams are trading OLB Robert Quinn to Dolphins for draft pick

The Miami Dolphins are acquiring Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Quinn from the Los Angeles Rams, a league source confirmed. For much of the last few seasons of his career, injuries had become a concern but he was able to play in 15 games in 2017 with his only absence in being in the season finale where the team elected to sit several of its key players ahead of the playoffs. He addresses Miami's need for pass-rushing depth. The Rams and Dolphins are also swapping late-round picks.

This marks the second big trade to go down in the final weeks before the new league year (following last week's Marcus Peters trade). And if last season is anything to go on, then he still has plenty to offer coming off the edge. Harris disappointed with two sacks and his run defense struggles. They have not made a decision on Hayes who will be a free agent.

Quinn, the 14th overall pick in the 2011 draft, is heading into the third year of a four-year, $57 million contract he signed with the Rams in 2016.

The Dolphins will have one of the NFL's most expensive defensive lines, with Ndamukong Suh ($26.1 million), Quinn ($12.4 million) and Wake ($9.6 million) counting $48.1 million - approximately 27 percent of the projected salary cap. But they needed more help at the position and addressed that need.

The Rams will receive a mid-round pick in the deal, according to ESPN. Quinn is due $22 million over the next two seasons.

Whether the Dolphins will be re-working, or extending his contract is unclear. For the Rams, who now have almost $50 million in cap space following the Robert Quinn trade, it would significantly upgrade their secondary from what it was even this past season with Phillips calling the plays, and they'd be getting Talib on a very team-friendly deal. His cap charge is the largest of any nonquarterback, and the Dolphins could decide to move on after three years.
