Rafael Nadal: Spanish star backed to regain top form after injury

It marked the sixth tournament in a row that Nadal has pulled out of or retired from - Basel, Paris, the London ATP Tour Finals, Brisbane, Australian Open and Acapulco.

"I'm sorry to write this, but my worst possible scenario has been confirmed. I won't be able to play in Miami or Indian Wells as I need to recover", Nadal said in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Friday.

Nadal's withdrawal was greeted with dismay by Indian Wells tournament director Tommy Haas.

Now, he's out of Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami.

The 31-year-old has been struggling with a number of fitness problems in 2018 so far after the Spanish number one exited at the Australian Open at the quarter-final stage back in January.

Despite being forced to miss out on the two highest-tiered tournaments in America, which his great rival Roger Federer will defend, Petchey believes Nadal has made a "very smart decision" which will improve his ability to dominate once again on the red clay. "I dream of coming back to Roland-Garros", Sport24 quoted Federer, as saying.

The two-time Grand Slam victor was forced to retire against Ilya Ivashka at the Provence Open match last week. If Federer wins Indian Wells and Miami titles - The Swiss would secure his no.

"The 36-year-old said, "(It depends on) how I feel, it's much more than a decision, it's the decision of the year, it's in the middle of the year, it's a surface change".

But Nadal's priority every year is the clay-court season and in particular the French Open, a Grand Slam event held in late May and early June that the Spaniard has won a record 10 times.
