Ichiro Suzuki finalizing one-year deal to return to Seattle

With the Mariners in need of outfield depth, Ichiro Suzuki could be back in Seattle soon.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Seattle Mariners are close to signing a one-year deal with the 44-year-old.

The news comes as the Mariners learned they'll be without outfielder Ben Gamel for four to six weeks due to a strained right oblique muscle. Ichiro has been working out in Japan and was expected to play there in 2018 unless he had an offer from Major League Baseball.

Ichiro played in 136 games last season for the Miami Marlins and hit.255 with an OPS of.649. Mitch Haniger is also now injured with a sore right hand.

Again, nothing is yet official, but the two sides are talking and we could see Ichiro in Peoria soon. He spent the first 11 1/2 seasons in Seattle before being traded to the New York Yankees in 2012 season. He hit free agency when the Marlins declined his $2 million club option for 2018 as part of owner Derek Jeter's plan to shed payroll.

He's said he wants to play until he's 50.

The contract would be a major league deal, and negotiations are ongoing, according to the report.

Ichiro came over from Japan's NBP league in 2001 and immediately established himself as one of the best contact hitters in baseball, capturing rookie of the year honours.
