Buddhism Vs Islam In Sri Lanka: Emergency Declared In The Country

Minister of City Planning Rauff Hakeem said: "The cabinet of ministers decided on tough measures, including a 10-day nationwide state of emergency". "Additional security has been deployed in the area, the situation is under control", police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera told The Hindu, even as images of violence, which users claimed were from Kandy, flooded social media.

President Maithripala Sirisena said stern action would be taken against elements fuelling communalism in the island.

Sri Lankan Police on Tuesday re-imposed a curfew in parts of Kandy after violent mobs took to the streets on Monday burning houses and businesses in the latest spate of racial violence to hit the island country.

The government urges every citizen of Sri Lanka to desist from falling prey to such hate and misinformation campaigns.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the visit was planned before the state of emergency was imposed.

Of Sri Lanka's 21 million people, the Sinhalese Buddhists constitute for almost 70 percent of Sri Lanka's population, while Muslims make up almost 9 percent of the total population.

According to some analysts, the nationalist Buddhist organisation Bodu Bala Sena has been responsible for the ongoing violence targetting Muslims in Sri Lanka. Action could have been taken sooner to prevent clashes.

A police official said 24 people had been arrested over the killing so far.

In the past, religious and ethnic violence had turned deadly in Sri Lanka.

Buddhists are accusing Muslims of forcing people to convert to Islam while mobs set fire to Muslim-owned businesses and attacked a mosque in the eastern part of the country.

Dozens of mosques and homes were damaged on Monday night as crowds went on a rampage, sparking fears that communal violence could spread.
