Many British homes left without water as snow thaw bursts pipes

Thousands of properties in London, Wales, Kent and Sussex have been left without water after the change in temperature caused pipes to crack and water mains to burst.

London and the south-east of England have been the hardest hit, with about 13,000 homes in Kent and Sussex and 5,000 homes in London still without water.

Water suppliers have been criticized for not planning ahead properly, with London Mayor Sadiq Khan saying the shortage is "unacceptable".

Ofwat Chief Executive, Rachel Fletcher, said: "While the recent severe freeze and thaw have undoubtedly had an impact on pipes and infrastructure, this weather was forecast in advance".

Industry regulator Ofwat has criticised water companies for failing to plan for colder weather and ignoring warnings.

By Monday afternoon, the number of homes without water dropped to about 10,000, the Evening Standard reported, but customers who still didn't have running water were growing highly impatient.

A spokeswoman for Thames Water said: "Our customers who are without water are our top priority, and we asked for support and understanding from everyone else last night to help save as much water as possible".

The ongoing water supply problems affecting the country, most particularly parts of London and the South East of England, have been deeply distressing for all those affected.

Speaking at the Water UK City conference, he said that water companies had not been acting "sufficiently in the public interest" and accused some companies of "playing the system for the benefit of wealthy managers and owners, at the expense of consumers and the environment".

Londoners affected were understandably annoyed by the situation, taking to social media to express their concerns and annoyance, with many tweeting directly to water suppliers.

So far, 71 leaks have been repaired and a further 100 identified.

Householders are having to use bottled water while pipes undergo work to fix leaks and repair bursts amid milder conditions which followed the deep freeze.

"We were working with the Jaguar Land Rover site in Solihull and Cadbury's in Birmingham to reduce the amount of water they used yesterday".

The cold weather was blamed on the "Beast from the East" storm that caused temperatures to plunge for days across much of Europe and brought feet of snow to some areas.
