Trump considered firing WH counsel if he didn't deny threatening to resign

"That [Trump] uses an intermediary to convey a request to the White House Counsel and to suggest that if the request isn't satisfied the counsel will be fired, indicates something about how Mr. Trump is managing his relationship with his lawyer that is profoundly disturbing and dysfunctional", Robert Bauer, who served as general counsel to President Obama, told me.

In another instance, Trump told an aide White House counsel Don McGahn should deny the reports about the president ordering him to fire Robert Mueller.

"The episodes demonstrate that even as the special counsel investigation appears to be intensifying, the president has ignored his lawyers' advice to avoid doing anything publicly or privately that could create the appearance of interfering with it", the New York Times report said.

"Telling McGahn to lie to the public about [Trump's] order to fire Mueller is not a crime, but it shows that Trump was concerned about the truth coming out and/or that he had a guilty conscience", wrote former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti.

The Times cited "three people familiar with the encounters" in its report. But Priebus, who is seeking to build a law practice as a Washington power broker who can open doors for clients, has maintained contact and occasionally visited the White House to see Trump and his own replacement, Kelly.

McGahn is a critical witness in the Russian Federation investigation.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment, while the special counsel's office declined comment.

These interactions (depending on how you interpret the McGahn conversation) may not be illegal, but they raise serious questions. Boente is now the Federal Bureau of Investigation general counsel.

- President Trump is upset with White House press secretary Sarah Sanders over her responses Wednesday regarding his alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels, a source close to the White House tells CNN.

James Comey, who was then the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said Trump asked him for his loyalty and to end the investigation into his first national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

Mueller's investigation arose in part from the findings of USA intelligence agencies that Russian Federation had meddled in the 2016 election and that its goals eventually included aiding Trump who won a surprise victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Those conversations were revealed to Mueller in interviews with witnesses who considered the interactions as troublesome.

Now none of this is proof that Trump colluded with the Russians during the 2016 campaign.
